Project 1 - “Him to Them” - Excerpt
Set in an alien galaxy, the show bends gender norms through visuals, movement, and sound. I intentionally queer the stage using androgynous neon-colored costumes, mixed-genre choreography, abstract film, oral storytelling, and queer pop music. As our current government tries to set non-negotiable legal definitions of gender and sexuality, this show fights for the freedom of queer and trans existence. “Him to Them,” is an intergalactic space opera based on the story of my gender transition. Incorporating film, fashion, and dance in eleven song performances, “Him to Them” explores various expressions of gender from the masculine to the feminine to the androgynous and beyond. I have performed the show at multiple venues/festivals in New York drawing together the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies.“Him to Them” is influenced by the traditions of glam rock and inspired by artists such as David Bowie, Boy George, and George Michael. Over the course of 35 minutes, I dance to and sing several original songs (which I produced and wrote), change into multiple original costumes (made of found and new materials) that I’ve designed, and perform six choreographed dances (created by myself and in collaboration with D and J Dance Company) with two backup dancers while a film (of which I edited—a mixture of original recordings, music videos, and stock footage) is projected onto the backdrop of the stage. Shot by Community Media Access Collaborative in Fresno, California. 2022.
